Have you heard Ablaze, Alanis Morissette’s new song?
As we were busy working behind the scenes on launching our Heart Happy website. We were up late and decided to listen to Alanis Morissette’s latest song Ablaze, we had already heard her other released song, Smiling. If you haven’t heard, Ablaze, take a few moments to listen and check her out on Jimmy Fallon with her daughter as she performs it (link at the bottom of the page, but read this first).
Some background on Alanis Morissette for Taunya was this was her first concert. Her parents took her with their friends to the Molson Amphitheatre. While she thought those lyrics were fitting for life as a teen (ripped jeans, greasy hair, and the beginnings of relationship troubles), the new album Such Pretty Forks in the Road, continues to provide an outlet and insight for life today.
Back to Ablaze, while we were listening, we quickly realised how this song was in line with the hopes of what we are trying to create for our family. The lyrics Alanis has written remind us of what our true purpose is as parents, “to keep the light in your eyes ablaze.” Our children have brought such light to our lives and we must strive to ensure they continue to emanate the light that is within them to the world. The connection we have to one another will always be there, even if we forget, our connectedness still exists. It is easy as parents to forget what our purpose is and to get bogged down by day to day life. We continually are challenged with the many demands of the day while trying to keep our children safe and happy during these unprecedented times.
This song brought our awareness back to the essence of why we became parents, and what an honour and privilege it is to raise our children and to be conscious of the actions and thoughts we are making daily. We get so caught up in the how that we forget about the now. The dangerous thoughts of what is next, the to-do lists, the accomplishments, the feats continue to dominate our minds. We get consumed by not doing enough, by feeling weak for not accomplishing more. Society and our ego are constantly reminding us that we are not enough and do not have enough.
What we really need is to understand that at the end of the day, what is here now in front of us (staring at me while I write this) is our future, our legacy, and the light in our own eyes. Our children are a reminder everyday that the light that is emanating from them is something we gave them, and they are giving back to us. When we all have light in our eyes, we have the ability heal each other, literally and figuratively. Keeping the light ablaze in their eyes is our purpose, our mission, and our passion to ensure our children continue to live a heart happy life being the best versions of themselves for their soul.

This song is so much more to us than a beautifully captured view of their family’s story and the individually unique qualities of their children. We understand it is a love letter to them about their devotion as parents, and if we all embraced this song and listened closely to relate our own stories and message the world would be better place. For us this serves as a reminder to really look at our children and to see them for who they are in this moment with us, together, forever connected. When one hurts, we all hurt; when one feels joy, we all feel joy.
Take a moment to listen to the song for yourself or listen with your child(ren) and tell them of all your hopes and dreams for them and keep striving to keep the light in their eyes Ablaze.
Logging off for now,
Rob and Taunya
